Cause of Cosmo-Bethel Park fire likely 'smoking material'

Friday, July 29, 2011 | 3:47 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — Improper disposal of smoking material likely caused the fire that destroyed playground equipment at Cosmo-Bethel Park on Tuesday evening, said Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief James Weaver.

Weaver said Friday that the Fire Department reached the conclusion about the cause of the fire based on evidence at the scene.

The Fire Department is not seeking suspects for further investigation, Weaver said.

The fire was reported by a citizen around 5:45 p.m., and the Fire Department was able to put the fire out shortly thereafter, according to a news release.
