BIG LAKE — The body of a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper who likely was swept away by floodwaters is still missing, but searchers were able to recover the body of his patrol dog.

The effort to recover the body of Trooper Fred Guthrie Jr., 46, of Platte City, resumed Wednesday near Big Lake in northwest Missouri. Guthrie has been missing since Monday when he and his K-9, Reed, disappeared while patrolling flooded lands in Holt County.

Reed's body was recovered Tuesday afternoon near Missouri 118, about 100 yards from where Guthrie's truck and boat were found Monday. Reed was found after sandbags were placed where the water meets the highway, creating a deep hole where the road is washing away.

The dog had worked with the patrol for five years.
