COLUMBIA — Around 9 a.m. Saturday Ross Bearman heard a crash, which he thought was thunder, from his apartment above El Rancho restaurant.

The crash he heard was in fact plaster and Sheetrock falling from the restaurant's ceiling into the dining area.

The owner of El Rancho, Faustino Vazquez, said the restaurant is closed temporarily for maintenance repairs.

A sign on the door alerts customers of the restaurant's temporary closure.

“We figure it would be a lot safer to close,” Vazquez said.

The restaurant has been closed since Saturday morning, he said, and estimates the repairs should be finished within a week.

“For the sake of our customers, it was the best thing,” Vazquez said.
