ST. LOUIS — It is a solemn milestone, but a significant one: The 100,000th person to receive military funeral honors through the Missouri National Guard Funeral Honors Program was buried this week.
Missouri National Guard Sgt. Anthony Deal of St. Louis was buried Tuesday at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis County.
Deal died Aug. 8 from brain tumors. He was 36. He was a chemical operations specialist with the Army National Guard's 3175th Chemical Co., headquartered at Jefferson Barracks.
The program began in July 1999 and provides a military funeral honors team for every Missouri veteran who was honorably discharged or died while still serving. The National Guard says the program averages 25 funerals per day statewide.
