OTTERVILLE — The death of a central Missouri toddler who shot himself in the head is being investigated as an accident.

The Cooper County Sheriff's Department said Thursday the 33-month-old boy was home with his father in rural Otterville when the shooting happened Tuesday night.

The Sedalia Democrat reports the boy got hold of a handgun and fired a round, striking himself in the head. Authorities interviewed the father and determined the shooting was accidental

The toddler was taken to Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia, then airlifted to a hospital in Columbia. The sheriff says results of a preliminary autopsy Wednesday were consistent with an accidental shooting.
