COLUMBIA — Powerlifting has given Kate Walker a sense of accomplishment, world championships, and now, a spot in Sports Illustrated.
Walker, a 62-year-old Columbia resident who has been competing in powerlifting for the past four and a half years, holds world records in the 60- to 64-year-old age group for the power squat, bench press and dead lift. She set the high marks at the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation championships in Muskegon, Mich., on June 25.
A month after the achievement, Walker described the sport as "empowering."
Sports Illustrated took notice and featured Walker in the Faces in the Crowd section of the magazine, which highlights the accomplishments of elite athletes around the country.
“When I first heard from them I thought, ‘Oh my gosh. This is Sports Illustrated.' I was certainly excited,” Walker said.
The Sports Illustrated item on Walker can be found in the Sept. 5 issue of the magazine, which hit newsstands Wednesday.
