COLUMBIA — A 61-year-old Columbia man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of armed criminal action and on suspicion of domestic assault.

Police were dispatched Tuesday at 9:54 p.m. to investigate reports of an argument involving weapons at 4901 Merrell Dr., Public Information Officer Latisha Stroer said in an email.

A woman, who was not identified, told police officers she and Alex Carthron, 61, had argued, and he began to choke her until she couldn’t breathe. She said he then went into the bedroom and began yelling and waving a shotgun, according to the email.

The woman said she had been in a three-year relationship with Carthron, according to the email.

The woman was not injured, Stroer said.

Officers arrested Carthron on suspicion of armed criminal action, second-degree domestic assault, unlawful possession of a concealed weapon and unlawful use of a weapon.

His total bond was $113,500.
