Russell Boulevard Elementary to host Family Fitness Night

Wednesday, September 7, 2011 | 7:11 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — Russell Boulevard Elementary School will host a Family Fitness Night on Sept 13.

Students, parents and teachers will walk one mile around the school's track at the event, which kicks off Russell's half marathon challenge. The goal of the challenge is to motivate students to become more active by walking the equivalent of a half marathon — 13.1 miles — on their own, said Russell secretary Mary Lamberson.

Tuesday's mile will count toward their half marathon, and the children will be given a log to keep track of any additional walking they do outside of school. Lamberson said the students that complete the challenge will receive a medal in November.

The event will be held at the school, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
