JOPLIN — Joplin residents have until Oct. 15 to demolish structures damaged by this spring's devastating tornado.
Joplin officials announced the deadline Thursday; it applies only to structures not planned for reuse.
People who are without insurance to hire contractors and who are unable to do the work themselves may request volunteer assistance in the demolition process, The Joplin Globe reported.
The request applies to slabs, basements, crawl spaces, footings, driveways and any other structures that will not be reused.
The city will clear the lots of those who do not do meet the deadline or don't notify the city of their intent to rebuild the structures. The cost of the work will be charged to the property owner.
