COLUMBIA — Boone County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested a man Tuesday on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender.

Kristofer R. Wyatt, 21, was convicted of child molestation in Texas, according to a Boone County Sheriff's Department news release. He was arrested at his residence, 518 Jackson St., a few minutes before 10:30 a.m. and posted $4,500 bond to be released from Boone County Jail.

The release stated that deputies and detectives randomly checked addresses of registered sex offenders Tuesday to ensure the offenders were following state and federal laws.

Convicted sex offenders, by law, are required to register with the sheriff's department. According to the release, they are required to provide their current address, place of employment and other information, and must immediately report address or employment changes to the department.

According to the release, about 60 residences were checked by mid-Tuesday, and most offenders were following the law. Deputies will be dispatched for follow-up checks at a later date to residences where offenders were unable to be contacted.

Offenders convicted of sex crimes against adults must verify their information with the sheriff's department every 180 days, the release stated. Individuals convicted of sex crimes against children must report every 90 days.
