FAIRVIEW: Russell Boulevard Elementary School to host kindergarten picnic

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 | 8:41 p.m. CDT

FAIRVIEW — Kindergartners at Russell Boulevard Elementary School are gearing up for a night of food, fun and a chance to meet the school's new mascot, Rusty the Raven.

Students, their teachers and their families will gather from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday for the school's second Kindergarten Picnic.

More than 200 people attended last year's inaugural picnic, and because of its success, the school decided to make it an annual event, said Mary Lamberson, the principal's secretary.

"This is an opportunity for families to get to know each other, for the teachers to meet parents and siblings and to build a sense of community," Lamberson said.

"It’s a chance for the kindergarteners to introduce their parents to their friends," said kindergarten teacher Gina Johanning. "It's fun to watch the family dynamics. Parents also get to meet each other. I hope it builds lasting relationships."

Johanning described the excitement among the students at the picnic: "The kindergarten students are always so proud of the food they bring. They'll say, 'Try the cupcakes my mom made.' They're really excited for the teachers to try it."
