GRANBY — The mayor of a southwest Missouri town has paid a state fine out of her own pocket because the town doesn't have the money.

Granby mayor Donna Fullerton said the town of about 2,000 residents doesn't have the money to pay the $2,500 fine from the Department of Natural Resources. That's why she paid the fine herself, Fullerton told The Joplin Globe.

The penalties stemmed from an open burn in May. The Department of Natural Resources said the town violated the state's open-burning requirements by burning regulated solid waste at the city's recycling center.

Fullerton said the open burn was for the disposal of yard waste, brush, leaves and tree limbs, but because of a lack of supervision, other items were thrown onto the fire without the staff's knowledge.
