MOBERLY — The city of Moberly will lose 135 jobs when educational publisher Scholastic closes a packaging facility and consolidates the work in Jefferson City.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reported Monday that employees of Scholastic Moberly Packaging Center were told last week that the operation will close early next year.
They'll be given priority to apply for 90 permanent and seasonal jobs being added at the Jefferson City location, about 60 miles to the southeast. Scholastic says the Jefferson City plant employs as many as 1,500 people during the peak season.
A company spokeswoman says the closing results from Scholastic's decision to discontinue its "Back to Basics" toy business.
