COLUMBIA — Volunteers will gather Saturday morning to give Russell Boulevard Elementary School's outdoor classroom a makeover.
The outdoor classroom behind the school includes a fire pit, small amphitheater, vegetable garden, butterfly garden, prairie grass and wetlands area.
The classroom, installed 15-20 years ago, has become overgrown and needs to be upgraded.
Russell Boulevard preschool teacher and project coordinator Lora Faiman said projects planned for Saturday include clearing out plants and installing a rock path to make navigation more accessible to students.
Volunteers met over the summer to begin the clean-up.
"What we've done already is pulling weeds and laying mulch. Our pretty immediate plan is to put in a gravel path," Faiman said.
Any volunteers wishing to help with the cleanup can meet at the school.
