COLUMBIA — Students, parents and alumni will celebrate the 50th homecoming for West Junior High on Thursday before the football game against Jefferson Junior High.
A tailgate, beginning at 5 p.m., will be held at Rock Bridge High School. The school's education partner, Shelter Insurance Cos., is sponsoring the majority of this event, Assistant Principal Daniel Rector said.
Participants will pay $5 to get in and receive a meal. Parents and volunteers are also bringing side dishes and desserts.
"We've been a charter partnership in Partners in Education," said Susan Thomas, chair of Partners in Education Committee at Shelter Insurance
"We were happy to provide funds from our Partners in Education budget to support the 50th anniversary tailgate."
The Closers, Spencer Kane and Jet Roberts from KFRU, will broadcast live from the tailgate. According to Rector, the school has received support from Cumulus Broadcasting for the KFRU coverage.
Special rally towels have been designed by Red Weir Athletic Supplies of Columbia. Each alumnus will receive one free, and they will be for sale at the apparel table.
"With this being our 50th homecoming game, we've been working on trying to invite alumni and guests to come out and join us in the activities," Rector said. "There will be an alumni table so we can keep track of our guests."
Several halftime activities are planned, including a decade call-off to show the school's history, a cheerleading performance and a baton duel/battle.
Another activity is a student field goal game. Students have purchased tickets during the week, and four to six will be selected in a random lottery to attempt a field goal. Students selected will receive a prize, and those who make a field goal will win a free pizza.
"The money raised from this will be donated to Cancer Awareness, a philanthropy that our cheerleaders have been actively raising money for this month," Rector said.
The game starts at 6 p.m. and will cost $1 for students and $2 for adults. A spirit bus will run at 4:50 p.m. from West Junior High to the tailgate at Rock Bridge High School.
