DOUGLASS: Students and parents to read 'under the stars' at Ridgeway Elementary School

Friday, October 21, 2011 | 1:52 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — The gym at Ridgeway Elementary School, 107 E. Sexton Road, will be decorated with twinkling Christmas lights Friday for a night of family reading.

Ridgeway's 2nd annual "Reading Under the Stars" event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the gym. Students and their parents are encouraged to bring sleeping bags and blankets.

The event is dedicated to a night of family literacy, Ridgeway Principal Ben Tilley said. He said that last year, there was a great turnout.

This year, Ridgeway received a grant from Target for $2,000 for early reading, which will provide every student with a new book when they leave.

Two rooms will be available for families wanting to read together. Other rooms will be open so people can watch videos related to books and have an opportunity to listen to books being read aloud.
