COLUMBIA — A 27-year-old Columbia man was sentenced Monday by the Boone County Circuit Court to five years of supervised probation on charges of possession and promotion of child pornography.

According to a news release, the Boone County Sheriff's Department Cyber Crimes Task Force began an investigation of Thach Hoang Nguyen in February, finding at least 30 videos and hundreds of photographs at his residence.

The defendant turned himself in to the court in March and was released after posting a $9,000 bond. He then pleaded guilty in August on one count of the possession of more than 20 images of child pornography and one count of possession of one video.

The release said the court sentenced Nguyen on Monday to an eight-year prison term for each count to be served consecutively. The sentence was then suspended, and he was placed on five years supervised probation.
