FAIRVIEW — Broadway Christian Church has found a new partner for its food ministry.

The ministry, which offers discount groceries to parishioners and Columbia residents, has joined Mid America Foods, based in De Soto.

Broadway Christian, along with several other churches in the area, had partnered with Angel Food Ministries to provide low-cost foods, but Angel Food closed its doors in September.

Debby Graham, the coordinator of outreach services at Broadway Christian, was able to anticipate this change and keep the program running smoothly.

"We had partnered with Angel Food for five years, and I had sort of an inkling that something was going on. It was nothing that they had said, nothing that I had heard, I just wasn’t getting a real good feeling about some of the stuff I was reading," said Graham. "So we actually had the owner and president of Mid America Foods come and do a sampling for us in July."

Churches participating in Angel Food were invited to come hear him and taste the food.

Mid America, a discount grocery ministry, offers several varieties of low-cost food boxes and new menus once a month. Anyone is eligible to place an order online. Mid America has over 150 outreach centers in 12 states, and Broadway Christian Church is the only outreach center in Columbia, said Matthew Brooks, the Missouri regional director for Mid America Foods.

Brooks said the company has been distributing food for 18 months, bringing in many of the former Angel Food outreach centers.

"We’re just hoping to help as many people save money on their food as we can. Everything is going up, so we’re trying to help in any way," Brooks said.

The church took its first shipment in October and the total number of orders have increased with the change in suppliers.

"Our goal is to definitely increase the number of orders. The response has been very positive so far. People seem to really enjoy variety and low costs. Many people have also told me the overall quality is better," Graham said.

Next month’s orders are due online by 10 p.m. Dec. 11, with delivery at Broadway Christian on Dec. 16. Options include holiday meal boxes, dessert boxes, fruit and vegetable boxes, as well as several other offerings. Complete menus, pricing and ordering information can be found at Mid America Foods’ website.
