Electrical short temporarily closes some police lines

COLUMBIA — Smoke from a surge protector in the operations room at the Columbia Police Department headquarters reduced phone capacity from six lines to two Sunday night.

Scott Smith, Joint Communications spokesman, asked the public to limit 911 calls to life-threatening emergencies until midnight, when he said he expected the department to be fully functional.

Until midnight, Smith said, the public should contact the police department at its direct line, 874-7652.
