COLUMBIA — On Tuesday night, the body of James Hickem, 17, was found in Boone Quarries.

A worker found a body in the quarry Tuesday that was later identified as Hickem.

On Friday, the police encountered Hickem after receiving a call about minors smoking and drinking at Cosmopolitan Park. While officers were questioning a female, Hickem approached and claimed the alcohol was his.

After being led back to a patrol car to be searched, Hickem escaped the police by running to the east of the park. Additional officers arrived to search for Hickem, but they were unable to find him.

Earlier in the year, Hickem had been given a trespass warning for the park. When he was stopped by police, he was in violation of the warning and fled.

On Tuesday night, Hickem's cause of death was unknown. The police investigation was ongoing.
