JEFFERSON CITY — A former employee of the Cole County Sheriff's Department has been charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the department.

Deborah Thomas, 38, of Jefferson City was charged Thursday with two counts of felony stealing.

Thomas is charged with stealing more than $15,700 by using the department's credit card for personal use. The second count alleges she used the department's Walmart credit card for her own use, but court records do not indicate the amount allegedly taken with the card.

Court records showed Thomas was released on a $5,000 bond Thursday. She is scheduled to appear in court in December.

The Jefferson City News-Tribune reported that Thomas' alleged crimes were discovered during an audit in July.

Court records do not indicate if Thomas has an attorney.
