TROY — An unlicensed day care provider is accused in the death of an infant who died while napping.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that 39-year-old Cherie Kohenskey of Troy pleaded not guilty Monday in Lincoln County to a charge of second-degree involuntary manslaughter related to the July death of 2-month-old Levi Haggard.

Authorities said the baby died of probable suffocation after Kohenskey laid him on his abdomen in a queen-size bed with pillows nearby.

State child-welfare investigators said Kohenskey was tending to eight children for pay and two children of her own. Under state law, unlicensed child care providers may care for up to four children unrelated to them.

The charge is punishable by up to four years in jail and a $5,000 fine.
