UPDATE: Columbia police identify victim of 'suspicious' death near White Oak Lane

COLUMBIA — Police have identified the man found dead near White Oak Lane on Tuesday as Timothy Ray Jones, age 43.

At 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a call from a jogger at the end of White Oak Lane after he reported seeing a man lying unresponsive near the MKT Nature and Fitness Trail. The cause of death was unknown Tuesday afternoon.

White Oak Lane leads to a small connector trail that intersects with the MKT Trail just east of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and Garden.

A release from the Columbia Police Department said the death was "suspicious in nature." Police have reason to believe it may be a homicide, Sgt. Jill Schlude said.

Questions "simply cannot be answered at this time without potentially jeopardizing the investigation," Schlude said.
