COLUMBIA — A former Columbia man died Tuesday morning in an automobile accident on U.S. 61 in Pike County.

Preston Shepherd, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Coroner Jim Turner. The accident happened while Shepherd was driving to a hospital to seek medical attention for abdominal pain, Turner said.

Shepherd’s 2004 Ford Taurus hit a concrete drainage ditch and overturned when he lost control, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s crash report.

His mother, Theresa Shepherd, 84, was riding with Shepherd at the time of the accident. She suffered moderate injuries, according to the crash report.
