San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith, a Jefferson City native and a standout at Missouri from 1998 to 2001, was named to the Pro Bowl for the third time Tuesday.

Smith, one of eight 49ers players to earn spots in the Pro Bowl, will start for the NFC after receiving the most votes from fans at his position.

The New England Patriots, led by quarterback Tom Brady, also had eight players named to the Pro Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 29 in Honolulu.

The Kansas City Chiefs have two players on the roster: linebackers Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson. Both are first-time selections.

The St. Louis Rams had no one selected.

Defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay, led by starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and Baltimore, led by veteran linebacker Ray Lewis, each had seven players selected.
