COLUMBIA — A Columbia man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing his roommate's checkbook and cashing checks without his permission.
Officers responded to a call at 10 a.m. Wednesday to the U.S. Bank branch at 507 Business Loop 70 W. after receiving a report regarding fraud, said Latisha Stroer, Columbia Police Department public information officer.
Joint Communications received a report that the subject was trying to cash checks from a stolen checkbook.
William Orvil Cornine, 52, of Columbia, was arrested on suspicion of felony stealing and forgery, Stroer said.
The roommate's checkbook was stolen on about Dec. 29. In that time, five separate checks were cashed totaling more than $1,000. The bank called the police because the roommate had reported the checks as fraudulent at another bank location and a flag was put on the account, Stroer said.
Cornine is being held at Boone County Jail with a bond of $25,000.
