COLUMBIA — A Hartsburg man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of burglar's tools at the Boone County Fairgrounds Coliseum early Wednesday morning.

An off-duty deputy providing overnight security checked the area after hearing suspicious noises near an exterior door but didn't see anyone in the vicinity. An hour later, the deputy discovered Steven E. Babcock Jr., 19, inside the Coliseum building with a pair of metal shears and arrested him at 3:35 a.m., according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.

The fairgrounds is currently hosting the MFA Incorporated Trade Show. The Coliseum contained valuable merchandise, tools, farm equipment and personal property at the time of the incident. It is not thought anything was stolen, the Sheriff’s Department said.
