COLUMBIA — Missouri's unemployment rate for December 2011 fell two-tenths of a point from November and hit 8 percent — its lowest rate since January 2009, according to the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
Unemployment in Missouri has fallen 1.7 percent overall since January 2011, the department said in a news release.
Boone County's unemployment rate was not immediately available.
Columbia has historically experienced rates of unemployment lower than those experienced by Missouri overall, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In November 2008, Columbia experienced an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent, which was lower than Missouri's rate of 7.2 percent. Similarly, in November 2010, Columbia's unemployment rate was 6.1 percent while Missouri's rate was 9.6 percent. In November 2011, Columbia's unemployment rate fell to 5 percent while Missouri's rate fell to 8.2 percent in November 2011.
