Friday, January 20, 2012 | 9:54 a.m. CST

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas basketball player Ben McLemore, 18, has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of minor in possession of alcohol.

McLemore's attorney, Al Lopes, entered the plea Thursday during a court hearing that McLemore did not attend.

The Lawrence Journal-World reported that McLemore was ticketed Nov. 4 after allegedly being caught with a drink at a Lawrence bar. The freshman from St. Louis also missed a court date in December.

McLemore is ineligible to play this season for academic reasons, though he began practicing with the team in January.

Kansas coach Bill Self has said that any discipline for McLemore will be handled internally.

McLemore's next court appearance is scheduled for March 6.

It takes a special kind of genius to plead innocent to possession after being caught in a bar under age when you're a local celebrity.

Stay classy, chickenhawks!
