HOLTS SUMMIT — A mid-Missouri teenager has been charged with killing his grandmother and shooting at law enforcement officers.

Seventeen-year-old Ryan Wayne Koebel faces multiple counts, including first-degree murder and first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer. The Callaway County prosecuting attorney filed the charges Saturday morning.

Koebel is accused of fatally stabbing and shooting his 60-year-old grandmother, Karen Cates, on Friday morning in their Holts Summit home. Authorities say Koebel also used a .38 caliber handgun to shoot at Missouri State Highway Patrol and Holts Summit Police Department officers as he walked along U.S. 54.

The Highway Patrol says a trooper hit the teen with his vehicle. The teen was treated at hospitals in Columbia and Jefferson City before being taken to the Callaway County Jail.
