STANTON — Police say a 17-year-old is in custody after a standoff with police at the caretaker's residence of Meramec Caverns in eastern Missouri.

Investigators said Monday's incident began when the 17-year-old fired shots at a car near Stanton in Franklin County.

The shooter then followed the driver of a second car to his home. A neighbor with a shotgun scared off the gunman.

Police say the teenager abandoned his car and broke into the caretaker's residence at Meramec Caverns. He eventually freed the caretaker but stayed inside the home for a short time before surrendering.

The investigation is continuing.
