FROM READERS: Wetlands before the snowfall

Herring Gulls fight for fish on Feb. 11.

John Hall frequently photographs his mid-Missouri surroundings, and he has been sharing his images with MyMissourian.com for several years.

This set of photos basically features Herring Gulls during a feeding frenzy that never ceases. I must say that when the photos were being taken I never detected a single one with a fish in its beak.

However, when pulling them up on the computer to 100% size, it was obvious that those gulls had a fish or were about to get one.

It could be said "My Tale is Told," but in all honesty in taking those photos "My Tail Was Cold." Winter is back on center stage and with it came the annual rite of late winter ... starting tomato seeds in the seed beds. Between now and May the photos will probably encompass the changing of the seasons, on a weekly basis, to reporting on the progress of four tomato varieties. This year I'm banking on the Hillbillies, Cherokee Purples and Yellow Brandywines to to make up the bulk of the crop.

This story is part of a section of the Missourian called From Readers, which is dedicated to your voices and your stories. We hope you'll consider sharing. Here's how.
