Michael Taksar, Sept. 9, 1949 — Feb. 12, 2012, of Columbia

COLUMBIA — Dr. Michael Taksar, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Missouri, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2012. 

Dr. Taksar was born on September 9, 1949 in Moscow, Russia, the son of Joshua and Tamara (Vitold) Taksar. He graduated from Moscow University in 1971, earning a degree in Mathematics and Mechanics. He immigrated to the United States in 1977 and graduated from Cornell University in 1979, earning his Ph.D. in Mathematics. 

Dr. Taksar taught at Stanford University, Florida State and Stony Brook University before joining the University of Missouri Faculty in 2002. Dr. Taksar was an accomplished mathematician whose works have been published. He was affiliated with many associations of professional mathematicians, including the American Mathematicians Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. 

He was united in marriage to Tanya Kuznetsova on October 1, 1994 in Setauket, New York and to this union one son was born, Serge Taksar. 

Survivors include his wife, Tanya Taksar and son, Serge Taksar. 

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Michael Taksar Scholarship Fund in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Missouri. Checks should be made out to University of Missouri and sent to Kimberly Dostoglou, Department of Mathematics, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 65211.
