FROM READERS: What are you giving up for Lent?

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, a 40-day season in preparation for Easter. Many Christians observe this period by fasting, abstaining from eating meat on Fridays, giving something up or doing something extra.

We asked Twitter and Facebook users: Do you give up anything for Lent? If so, what did you choose this year?

Nathan Byrne: "Instead of giving something up, I'm taking something on: being more patient with my kids and (hopefully) renewing my focus on healthier eating and exercise."

Andrew Squitiro: "Giving up Myself."

@ninamarie_4: “Goodbye coffee. #lent”

@FatChicksChow: “Can you give up working for #lent?”

@amourbella7: “Gave up Facebook for #Lent”

@AllyOhSoVicious: “I usually do. This year I'm giving up all sodas & juices except for water & an occasional bottle of Naked for Healthier me.”

@afbacher: “Dear caffeine addiction, please let me get through today at work without you. Thanks. #lent #fasting”

@lizziewhite7: “Day 1 of not eating after 9:00 pm. With two tests tomorrow #lent #mylife”

@brittbeav: "Giving up mayo and sour cream for lent #unnessarycals”

@CaseyPurcella: “I gave up religion for #Lent”

@Dylon_Sacco: “What should I give up for lent? Fast food? Procrastination? #anyideaspeople”

@Lickenbroccoli: "Giving up all soda, candy, and fast food for lent. Is this an Airhead move, or will this Spree make me the Burger King? #lent"

@jessielueck:"#Lent should be less about giving up something insignificant, and more about ADDING something beneficial to your life.#AshWednesday"

Do you give up anything for Lent? If so, what are you giving up this year?
