The Columbia Area Career Center is a secondary and post-secondary institution that serves as a learning environment for the community. The center was established in 1979, and it serves both high school students and adults, with two staff members located at Hickman High School. Currently there are 27 dual credit agreements and 76 specific articulation agreements available to students. The mission of the Columbia Area Career Center is to provide educational opportunities for the community by focusing on both “skill developments to obtain or advance employment” and “personal enrichment.”

The High School Career Center uses six clusters to organize occupations of interest for its students. These areas are open for use starting in seventh to ninth-grade students and can be continued once post-secondary education is finished. These areas of focus include arts and communication, engineering and industrial technology, natural resources agriculture, human services, business, management and technology and health services. The staff at the center has proficiency in reading, math, academic accommodations, and assessment.

The Adult Learning Center provides adult education that includes GED preparation, English as a second language, citizenship and workforce skills training. The center includes such focus areas as health occupations, trade and industry, online programs and business and computers. The Adult Learning Center also offers personal enrichment courses to improve overall well-being. These programs include arts and crafts, culinary, dance and fitness, fine arts, history and lore, hobbies and games and mind, body and spirit.

The Columbia Area Career Center has local business partners in education, including MU administrative services, MFA, River Region Credit Union, and the City of Columbia. Local, state and federal governments fund the center although it mainly relies on local dollars.
