COLUMBIA — Orlyn “Wray” Homan sold 10,000 cars during his 28 years as a car salesman at Joe Machens Ford.

“It made him happier, more than anything else,” his daughter, Edie Homan, said. But his passion for automobiles extended beyond selling. He was also involved with car racing. He sponsored two racers — Keith Davis and Danny Crane — at the Lake of the Ozarks weekend races, which he attended as much as possible.

Orlyn “Wray” Homan of Columbia died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at his home. He was 76.

Mr. Homan was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Otterville to George and Edith Klein Homan. He married Patricia Jones on Aug. 11, 1957, in Sedalia.

“He was a good guy all the way around and a wonderful provider,” his daughter said.

Known for his love of practical jokes, Mr. Homan was always pulling pranks. The big thing at his work was tagging, Edie Homan said, which she explained was a sort of game her father would initiate in which employees would tape silly pictures on each others' backs.

Another of his favorite pranks involved sneaking small objects like sugar packets into people’s pockets when they were not looking. Edie Homan, who worked with her father, was surprised by how often his trick would go unnoticed. And he would always be giggling.

Mr. Homan also loved animals. He had an Italian greyhound named Guido, a Yorkie named Henry, a 26-year-old toothless cat named D.J. and a stray cat named Dingo.

Mr. Homan is survived by his wife, Patricia Homan; three daughters, Edie Homan, Crystal Dennise Homan and Gladys McFarland; and a stepson, Danny Lee Beene.

His parents, brother and four sisters died earlier.

Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Nilson Funeral Home, 5611 E. St. Charles Road. The service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at the same location.
