Republicans outnumber Democrats on first day of Missouri filings

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 | 10:37 a.m. CST

JEFFERSON CITY — There appears to be more interest among Republicans in running for office in Missouri than among Democrats.

After the first day of candidacy filing, the secretary of state's office reported that 242 Republicans have signed up to run for federal offices, statewide executive offices, the state Legislature or circuit judgeships. By comparison, 149 Democrats filed to run for those offices on Tuesday's start of candidacy filing.

There is plenty of time for more people to get into the races. Candidacy filing continues through March 27.
