LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Barbara Hoppe cares about Columbia, not just Sixth Ward

A true story: How Barbara Hoppe will represent you.

In July 2010, the Columbia Public Works Department sent certified letters to our Fifth Ward neighborhood that our street would be dug up so that connecting sewer pipes could be run from the adjacent Maple Bluff Acres subdivision. We couldn’t understand why we were involved since our subdivision was already on city sewers. We found out that the Public Works staff had not notified us about a prior meeting held with Maple Bluff residents. The City Council was ready to vote at their next meeting.

Editor's note: The Missourian strives to publish differing views and welcomes letters to the editor. Letters should be about 400 words and must be signed. The deadline for submitting letters related to the April 3 election is March 29 to be published in the April 1 edition. Letters should be submitted to opinion editor Elizabeth Conner by email at connerek@missouri.edu, by mail at 221 S. Eighth St. Columbia, MO 65211 or by fax at 882-5702.

After contacting all of the council members about our concerns, we heard from Barbara Hoppe from the Sixth Ward. She visited our street and saw how the plan would impact us. She was concerned that Public Works held a meeting that did not include us. She advocated for us, and the council voted to postpone its approval of the project until the plans could have additional input from our subdivision.

Moral of the story: Barbara Hoppe cares about all the residents of Columbia. She walks the land to see the potential impact of council and city departments’ decisions on neighborhoods.

If you live in the Sixth Ward, please vote on April 3 for Barbara Hoppe. If you live in another ward, please support her however you can. You may need her help in the future.

Diane Booth and Jeanne Sebaugh are Columbia residents.
