Soon-to-be Columbia kindergartners draw how they picture school
COLUMBIA — Future kindergartners got a taste of elementary school Wednesday afternoon at Columbia Public Schools' 2012 kindergarten registration. The event gave students and their parents and guardians a chance to meet kindergarten teachers and see the classrooms.
While the children waited in the registration line with their parents, the Missourian asked 10 future kindergartners at Mill Creek Elementary School to draw what they thought they would be doing in kindergarten. The most popular answer was art, but children also said they wanted to make new friends and learn about numbers and dinosaurs.
- Nicholas Turner wants to learn about dinosaurs in kindergarten. He drew a picture of a “Bug Beetle Brontosaurus” and thought the 22-year-old Missourian reporter was old enough to have seen live dinosaurs.
- Adien Poehlein said he is excited to go to play outside in kindergarten. He drew a picture of a whale and wrote his name.
- Livy McCarty said she thinks in kindergarten she and her classmates will do art. She drew a picture of her mom.
- Kaki Terrell said she thinks she will play and do art in kindergarten. She also said she thinks she will learn spelling. She drew a picture of a herself playing.
- Langston Thomas said he wants to have fun in kindergarten. “I think we will watch TV and do class,” he said.
- Mason Snider said he is excited to make new friends in kindergarten and do art. He drew a picture of paint and a paint brush he would use to make a picture.
- Isaac Ramirez said he thinks he will learn about numbers and math in kindergarten. He drew dots on his paper and counted them. He also added that he hopes his kindergarten class will have cookies.
- Chloe Bunten said she doesn’t know what she will do in kindergarten but is excited that she already has learned how to write her name. Her favorite part of preschool is work time and she drew a picture of her preschool teacher.
- ZayIvion Foster drew a picture of himself playing with blocks in kindergarten.
Besides learning math, Isaac Ramirez also is hopeful that his kindergarten class will have cookies.
