COLUMBIA — When starting pitcher Blake Holovach threw a complete-game shutout against High Point University on Saturday, it allowed the Missouri baseball team's relief pitchers to take the day off.
Turns out they needed it.
Blake Brown and Dane Opel both had home runs on Sunday. Opel now has five home runs and Brown has six, including four this week.
The Tigers have had only one other loss by more than three runs this season: a 6-0 loss at San Francisco on Feb. 26.
Missouri will begin Big 12 Conference play next weekend with a series against Oklahoma State.
Seven Missouri pitchers saw action in the series finale Sunday at Taylor Stadium, and the Tigers saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end in a 13-7 loss to the Panthers.
With the Tigers' normal Friday night pitcher Eric Anderson sidelined with a strained ligament in his elbow, freshman Brandon Platts made his second start of the season and his first start in a weekend series. Platts recorded only four outs and gave up five runs before being pulled from the game by coach Tim Jamieson.
"He's a guy that has a chance, with his stuff, to be a weekend starter," Jamieson said of Platts. "The last couple starts that he's had, he hasn't gotten it done, so we have to look in another direction."
Although the Tigers rallied with six runs in the last three innings, High Point was able to respond with five runs and maintain a healthy lead.
Missouri recorded only six hits to High Point's 17, while its defense committed four errors.
Jamieson said he told his team to use the game as a reality check.
"Recognize that even when we're winning games, there are things we need to work on," he said. "In a game like this, things become pretty obvious."
The Tigers will look to rebound in a midweek game against Indiana State at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Taylor Stadium.
Freshman Brett Graves will get the start, but Jamieson said how long he stays in the game will depend on whether he decides to start him in next Sunday's game. Anderson is expected to miss one more week with the elbow injury.
