ROUNDUP: Boone County election candidates and proposals

COLUMBIA — Here is a roundup of the races and issues that will appear on Boone County ballots on April 3. 

Ashland

Board of Aldermen:

Michael P. Jackson is running unopposed for mayor. Gene Rhorer is running unopposed in Ward 1; John Hills, Nathan S. Reid and Randy Wyatt are running in Ward 2; Charles Crandall is running unopposed in Ward 3.

Centralia

Board of Aldermen:

Catherine Simmons is running unopposed in Ward 1; Jody Roberts and David Wilkins are running for a one-year unexpired term in Ward 1; Jon Angell and Adam Stites are running in Ward 2; Landon Magley is running unopposed in Ward 3.

Question 1 asks whether the office of collector should be changed from an elective office to an appointive office beginning April 1, 2013.

Question 2 is a proposed $800,000 bond issue to expand and renovate library facilities.

Board of Education:

Nathan Chitwood, Troy Crum, Art Dollens, Sharon D. Stowers and Drew Umstattd are running for two open spots.

Municipal Library District:

Question A asks whether there should be a tax increase of 15 cents to fund the city's library district.

Columbia

City Council:

Mike Atkinson, Bill Pauls and Michael A. Trapp are running in Ward 2.

Barbara Hoppe and Bill Tillotson are running in Ward 6.

School District, Board of Education:

Melvin G. Blase, Rex Cone, Paul S. Cushing and Christine King are running for two open spots.

Question 1 asks whether the district should be authorized to increase the tax levy by 40 cents to maintain current programs and staffing because of decreased state and federal funding.

Question 2 is a proposed $50 million bond issue to acquire sites for new school buildings, construct new elementary schools and improve and construct additions to existing school buildings.

Hallsville

Board of Aldermen:

Benjamin Austene and Cheri T. Reisch are running for mayor. Hugh F. Carney is running unopposed in Ward 1; Jeff Leverenz is running unopposed in Ward 2.

Board of Education:

Chris Ashburn, Greg Cotton and John P. "Boo" Cathey are running for two open spots.

Hallsville R-IV School District:

Proposition 2 asks whether the district should borrow $4.3 million to develop and construct a fine arts auditorium, science classrooms and other additions at the high school. The money would also be used to construct a classroom wing and a new gymnasium at the primary school, demolish the original high school building and remodel existing facilities of the district.

Harrisburg

Board of Trustees:

Pam Timmermann and Reggie Wilhite are running unopposed for two available spots.

Hartsburg

Board of Trustees:

Jeanette Crawford is the only candidate running for two available spots. The remaining position will be filled by a write-in.

Huntsdale

Board of Trustees:

Dorthy J. Eberhart, Ana Lopez and Ed McGee are running unopposed for three available spots.

McBaine

Board of Trustees:

Virginia Coleman and Marvin Sapp are running unopposed for two available spots.

Pierpont

Board of Trustees:

Justin John and Robert Miller are running unopposed for two available spots.

Kenneth Horn is running unopposed for a one-year unexpired term.

Rocheport

Board of Aldermen:

Joe Wolfe is running unopposed in Ward 1; Mike Friedemann and Angela Rapp are running in Ward 2.

Sturgeon

Board of Aldermen:

Steve Crosswhite and Danny Joiner are running in Ward 1; Kevin Abrahamson and Melissa Gish are running in Ward 2.

Board of Education:

Brent Brooks, Heather Dougherty and Debbie L. Rush-Crowley are running for two open spots.

Kirt Shives and Kevin Smith are running for a one-year unexpired term.

Boone County

Boone County Fire Protection District, Board of Directors:

Shelly Dometrorch and Phyllis Fugit are running unopposed for two available spots.

Hospital Board of Trustees

Bob Wagner is running unopposed for one available spot.

Southern Boone County Fire Protection District:

There is one question on the ballot. It is a proposed $2 million bond issue to construct and upgrade fire stations and training facilities. It includes but is not limited to acquiring and preparing a site to be used for a training facility, remodeling the existing 17-year-old Ashland fire station and purchasing a new fire engine to replace the district's 20-year-old first-response fire engine.

Southern Boone County R-1 Board of Education:

Bruce Bauer, Chuck Donigian, Joe Miller, Jamie Morris and Jessi Wenger are running for two open spots.

Other races and issues

North Callaway R-1 Board of Education:

Scott A. Starkey, Curt L. Warfield Jr. and Dennis Zerr are running for two open spots.

New Franklin R-1 Board of Education:

John Bailey, Heather Haase-Leonard and Darren Harris are running for two open spots as directors.

Public Water Supply District No. 4

John L. Mabary and John D. Williams are running for director of Sub-District No. 3.

Curtis L. Forbis is running unopposed for director of Sub-District No. 4.
