GetAbout Columbia project closes MKT trail tunnel at Stadium Boulevard

Monday, March 26, 2012 | 5:47 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — Construction will close the tunnel along the MKT Nature and Fitness Trail under Stadium Boulevard until the end of April.

The work will cost about $140,000 and take about five weeks to complete, Public Works Department spokeswoman Jill Stedem said.

The tunnel is located at Stadium Boulevard near the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at Battle Garden.

The project by Grun-D Construction of Tipton is funded by federal GetAbout Columbia funds for non-motorized transportation, according to a news release from the Public Works Department.

Drivers on Stadium Boulevard are encouraged to watch for pedestrians crossing the street due to the tunnel's closure, according to the news release.

Great news: Trail work appears to be finished! I LOVE the new trail construction! It looks like incredibly well-done work: approaches from both sides are smooth, comfortable, and provide decent visibility. The new water wall and drainage channel leaves the tunnel clean and dry.

I just posted a series of pictures on my Flickr account:

Thanks to GetAbout, PedNet, the City, and everyone involved in this trail reconstruction. I'm very pleased with the results!

Bummer: New trail underpass collects thick mud in heavy rains. It used to collect rocks and sand and a *little* mud. This is Monday morning, after Sunday night's rains:

I was really hoping the new drainage design would avoid that. Bummer.

I totally agree with my friend. This is absolutely a waste of money.

Hi there Mr. Fogle,

I'm Jessica Clark, the reporter for this story. I've been looking into your concerns about mud in the MKT trail tunnel.

Assistant Director Mike Griggs of the Columbia Parks and Recreation said the mud slid into the tunnel because the area is still under construction. Once the contractor is finished, the ground around the tunnel will be seeded for grass, which should help to keep the mud out.

Thank you for your comments.

Jessica Clark
