New name approved for Boone County Fairgrounds

COLUMBIA — The Central Missouri Event Center, Home of the Boone County Fair, might be a mouthful, but it's now the official name of the old Boone County Fairgrounds.

Members of the Boone County Commission renamed the fairgrounds Tuesday to reflect the diversity of the venue. Although the Boone County Fair is scheduled for eight days in July, dozens of other events are held there as well.

Next month's schedule for the Central Missouri Event Center:

April 1 — RK Gun Show and Maple Leaf Quarter Horse

April 4 — FFA Districts

April 6 and 7 — Tractor pull with National Antique Tractor Pullers Association

April 12 — Just Between Friends consignment sale

April 13-15 — National Barrel Horse Association competition

April 19 — FFA State

April 22 — MS MuckRuckus (fundraising event for multiple sclerosis)

April 28 and 29 — Missouri Paint Horse Club Horse Show

"We wanted to change the name to make it more accessible," said Monica Kuster, administrative assistant for the Boone County Commission. She said the old name didn't make the location clear or indicate that the venue showcased a variety of events.

For April, the calendar includes the RK Gun Show, MS MuckRuckus and the National Barrel Horse Association.

The new name is expected to draw in more events and spectators, which is good for the hotel and restaurant industry in Columbia, Kuster said.
