COLUMBIA — A Columbia woman suffered minor burns in an early morning apartment fire that caused about $150,000 damage to the building at 2012 W. Ash St.

Firefighters were dispatched to the building at 2:08 a.m. Friday and arrived to find flames emanating from the windows of Apartment 6 on the second floor, according to a news release from the Columbia Fire Department.

They contained the fire to the apartment and extinguished it in about 20 minutes. But Apartment 6 and neighboring apartments sustained smoke, heat and water damage.

Witnesses reported hearing smoke alarms in the apartment. The woman who lived there escaped with minor burns and was taken to University Hospital for treatment. A cat died in the fire.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown. Assistant Fire Marshal Lisa Todd investigated the scene and issued the damage estimate.
