JEFFERSON CITY — A Missouri House committee has endorsed a second attempt to place a photo ID requirement for voters on the 2012 ballot.
The measure passed Tuesday by the House Elections Committee would write a new ballot summary for a proposed constitutional amendment. A Cole County judge struck down the original summary last week.
At issue is a measure that would amend the Missouri Constitution to allow lawmakers to require voters to show government-issued photo identification at the polls.
Cole County Circuit Judge Pat Joyce struck down the summary prepared by lawmakers, in part because it referred to it as the "Voter Protection Act." That wording did not actually appear in the text of the measure. The newly proposed ballot summary removes that reference.
