WASHINGTON — The historic downtown in the eastern Missouri town of Washington is among five national winners in the 2012 Great American Main Street Awards.

The recognition comes from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The trust said a group called Downtown Washington Inc. has taken a leading role in shaping the town's future. The group has acquired and operated the town's post office, is developing upper-floor housing and restoring the historic Outdoor Civic Center.

The other winners are Culpeper, Va.; Bath, Maine; Jacksonville, Ill., and Valley Junction/West Des Moines, Iowa.

The winners were chosen by a national jury of former award winners, community development professionals and journalists.
