Kim Kraus is the Troop Leader of the West Boulevard Elementary Girl Scout troop.
My Girl Scout troop has been doing some activities around trash and recycling recently.
Last month our troop walked from West Boulevard Elementary to the Shelter Gardens. Along the way we picked up trash and recycling. We had prizes for the most interesting pieces of trash.
At a meeting we had Layli Terrill, waste minimization supervisor for the city, come and give us a presentation on trash and recycling. Then our girls divided into teams to see who could build the tallest free-standing structure out of some recycling materials. As troop leader, I have been washing and stockpiling recyclables to use for this project since last August! Many of the items are #5 and #6, which the city doesn’t take, so I personally take them to Ryan Enterprise in Millersburg. The awards to the team with the tallest structure were made from recyclables.
As a side note, in May, our troop will be using the city bus for transportation for an activity. We have done before. I like to have the chance to talk to the girls about alternate forms of transportation such as walking, biking and the bus.
This story is part of a section of the Missourian called From Readers, which is dedicated to your voices and your stories. We hope you'll consider sharing. Here's how.
