FROM READERS: Remembering Cole Steelman

April 13, 2012 | 4:41 p.m. CDT

Tyler Freeman is a friend of Cole Steelman, one of 14 students being commemorated today at MU Remembers, a ceremony remembering MU students who died in the past 12 months. A friend of Cole's since elementary school, he originally posted this on Cole's Facebook wall. He shared it with the Missourian.

While I and many others will be at your memorial tomorrow, we all share something that no one else there will have. We will know what it was like growing up around you.

Our minds will be filled with the pictures of you in Mr. OHS, pictures of you during spirit week, and pictures of you in your aviator sun glasses.

Our ears will be filled with the laughter you shared so freely, the music of your train horn and the smart remarks that seemed to never end.

Our hearts will be filled with joy as we remember all the fun we had with you and overwhelmed with sadness of your return home so quick.

And our eyes will be filled with tears as we laugh and reminisce on all the funny antics you were always up to, while remembering that there will never be anyone quite like you.

No one "loved life", as your dad described, quite like you. You've touched the lives of so many! While I know how hard it has been on everyone, it's comforting to know that we will all see you again someday! What an honor it has been to say that I had the pleasure of growing up with you.

If you know Cole or any of the other students being commemorated at MU Remembers, we invite you to share memories of them with the rest of the community, in the Missourian's From Readers section. Please consider sending us your memories and photos. Email them to
