Hickman boys tennis team struggles at Columbia Duals

Friday, April 13, 2012 | 8:04 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — The Hickman boys tennis team placed seventh out of 26 teams in the Springfield Invitational on Wednesday.

The Kewpies' No. 1 singles player, freshman Junyi Wu, advanced until there were only eight players left in a tournament that began with 52, but he lost in the semifinals, head coach Andrew Materer said.

The following day, Hickman had to play with a good portion of its team missing in the Columbia Duals against Joplin and Cape Central high schools. The Kewpies' No. 1, 2 and 5 singles players were not able to attend because they had already missed some school days for the matches in Springfield and they didn't want to miss more.

Hickman lost to Cape Central 3-6 and to Joplin 0-9.

The Kewpies play at home against Marshall at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cosmo Park in Columbia.
