Noah Barkovitz, 97, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012. A brief remembrance will be held at Tiger Place for the Tiger Place Community at 2pm, Thursday, April 19, 2012. Graveside services open to all will be at 3:30 pm Thursday at Columbia Cemetery.
Noah was born January 27, 1915 in Wardell, MO, to Ben H. and Rosa Kohn Barkovitz. He married Geraldine Lee Robinson on May 7, 1947, in St. Louis and she survives.
Noah graduated as Valedictorian from Hayti High School. He served with the US Army during World War II in Europe in the Signal Corp. He first was a member of Temple Israel in Blytheville, AR, and then became a member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Columbia, MO. With his family he owned and operated Barkovitz Store in Hayti, MO, for over 80 years. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, stock market enthusiast and completer of crossword puzzles. He loved people, especially his many friends in Hayti, MO, Temple Israel in Blytheville, and Tiger Place in Columbia.
Survivors include: his wife, Geraldine of Columbia; two daughters, Lynn Parshall and husband Tim of Columbia and Ellen O’Kelley and husband Gary of Overland Park, KS; two brothers, Abe Barkovitz and wife Pat of Hayti, MO, and Jacob Barkovitz and wife Dorothy of Olive Branch, MS; four grandchildren, Josh Parshall, Jordan Parshall, Kate O’Kelley and Ben O’Kelley (Caroline); one great-grandchild, James O’Kelley and nine nieces and nephews along with their spouses and children. He was preceded in death by his parents and a beloved sister, Esther Kaplan.
